Getting Started

What file formats does Recall Reader support?

Recall Reader supports EPUB files only. EPUB is the most widely used open e-book format and works with books from most stores and libraries (except Amazon Kindle).

What devices can I use Recall Reader on?

Recall Reader is available for Android devices, including:

  • Android phones and tablets (Android 8.0+)
  • BOOX e-ink readers (all models with Google Play)
  • Other Android-based e-ink devices (Onyx, Bigme, etc.)

The app is optimized for e-ink displays with high-contrast themes and minimal animations.

Why can't I use Recall Reader on my Kindle?

Amazon Kindle devices use a closed operating system that doesn't allow third-party reading apps. Additionally, Kindle books use Amazon's proprietary format (AZW/KFX) which includes DRM that prevents use with other apps.

If you want to use Recall Reader, we recommend BOOX devices, which run Android and support both the Google Play Store and EPUB files.

How do I add books to Recall Reader?

Open the app and tap the + button in your library. You can:

  • Browse your device's storage for EPUB files
  • Import from your Downloads folder
  • Use your device's file manager to share EPUBs directly to Recall Reader

Smart Features

How does the spoiler-free guarantee work?

When you ask about a character or request a recap, Recall Reader only sends the text up to your current reading position to generate the response. The AI never sees content you haven't read yet, so it can't spoil anything.

Do smart features work offline?

Partially. Recall and Who Is This have offline versions that work without AI—they use only what's on your device (e.g. your position and in-book data). Those offline versions are free for everyone. Pro subscribers also get multi-book memory offline, so Recall and Who Is This can use context from other books you've read on the device. The Explain feature and the full AI-powered Recall and Who Is This still require an internet connection.

Are responses always accurate?

Generated summaries and character profiles are helpful tools, but they may occasionally contain errors or misinterpretations. They're meant to jog your memory, not replace careful reading. If something seems off, trust the book text over the summary.

Is my book content private?

Yes. Book excerpts are only sent when you actively use a smart feature—we don't passively upload your library. Request metadata is logged for quality and abuse prevention (retained up to 90 days). Full text is not stored. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.

Subscription & Billing

What's included in the free version?

The free version includes full EPUB reading with all customization options, bookmarks, highlights, and basic features. Smart features have limited daily usage on the free tier.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed through Google Play. To cancel:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
  2. Tap your profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions
  3. Find Recall Reader and tap Cancel subscription

You'll retain access until the end of your current billing period.

How do I request a refund?

Refunds are processed by Google Play according to their refund policy. Generally, you can request a refund within 48 hours of purchase through the Play Store.

Account & Data

How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account and all associated data at any time:

Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. Your local reading data (bookmarks, highlights) will remain on your device unless you uninstall the app.

Does my reading data sync across devices?

Yes! Pro subscribers can enable Cloud Sync in Settings. Your library, reading progress, bookmarks, and highlights are backed up as a compressed archive and can be restored on any device signed into your account.

Backups are encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest on our servers. Access is restricted to your authenticated account.
